THE FIRST REMOTE - January 17, 2011

I know.  You think the first remote control was invented by someone at Zenith or RCA.  Not so.  It was invented by my dad.  It was a sort of planned-parenting project.

A key part of that plan was to engage siblings of differing sexes.  I am guessing my dad kept records and charts to measure the effectiveness of a male remote versus a female one.  Naw.  That can’t be right.  The man was terribly lazy.  Especially after unbuckling his pants, eating sandwiches from the La-Z-Boy reclining position.  He would never keep records.

Still, his project worked.  At least long enough for Zenith to develop a hand-held, sound-activated  remote.  I’d be watching some television late in the day when he would come home from work.  He would rattle his keys as he placed them on the piano where he kept them.  The sound from his keys would often change the channel.

But before the key-rattle-remote came my sister and me.  I am convinced to this day that the only reason we are both here on earth is because the remote had not yet been invented.

“Marilyn, turn it to channel 4.”

“Dave – turn it up!”

You get the drift.  And we both did as we were told.  It’s a damned good thing for our dad that Zenith came along before we both reached that rebellious pubescent age.  If it hadn’t come along when it did, surely my dad would have ended up watching television alone every night.  And he would have been stuck watching “Skipper Ed” on channel 12 more times than he would have cared to.

So, my sister and I were the very first remote controls.  I guess I owe my life to my dad’s lazy television viewing attitude.  And I owe Zenith for my ultimate survival as a human being.
